Texas Student Loan Repayment Assistance Program

The Texas Student Loan Repayment Assistance Program (Texas SLRAP) was created by the Texas Access to Justice Commission in 2003 to assist attorneys who choose to pursue legal aid careers in Texas. The Texas SLRAP is funded by the State Bar of Texas and the Texas Access to Justice Foundation.

Low legal aid salaries coupled with high student loan debt make it difficult or impossible to have a career in legal aid. The Texas SLRAP is a critical part of alleviating this burden and increasing access to justice for low-income individuals.

Texas Student Loan Repayment Assistance Program Qualification and Enrollment Process

In 2024,TAJF engaged Fosterus to undertake the day-to-day administration of the Texas SLRAP using their model of one-time enrollment, forgivable annual loans, and payments directly to loan servicers.

Fosterus is a nonprofit refinancing organization, making forgivable loans (LRAP loans) that refinance existing student loans. The Fosterus LRAP refinances only eligible federal and commercial education loans taken to pay qualified education expenses.

To enroll, contact LDMelton@teajf.org or LRAPSupport@Fosterus.org to request the name of your employer’s LRAP Designated Contact.

Qualifying criteria are unchanged and can be found in the Program Guidelines below. Qualifying attorneys for the program is no longer handled through an application process and no employer, lender, or law school certifications are required.

Helping Lawyers Who Help Low-income Texans

TAJF has administered loan repayment assistance to all eligible applicants since 2008 with the support of funds provided by the State Bar of Texas. Annually, the Texas SLRAP supports over 150 lawyers to have careers in civil legal aid.
