The Legacy
Wallace B. Jefferson, 26th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Texas, served from 2004 to 2013 and now practices appellate law. Upon his retirement from office, Jefferson donated funds from his office holder account fund to the Texas Access to Justice Foundation, the leading state-based funding source for legal aid in Texas. His generous donation was the catalyst needed to create the Legacy Fund for Access to Justice, which allows those leaving public office who have unused campaign funds to donate those funds to help fill the overwhelming need for basic civil legal services to low-income Texans.
The Need
Approximately 5.5 million Texans qualify for legal aid, the second-highest number in the nation, but only approximately 10 percent of the civil legal needs of eligible Texans are being met.
Adequate funding is critical to ensuring that every Texan, regardless of income, will have fair and equitable access to the civil justice system
